Kerala to set up interactive student migration portal to address challenges of student migration
Amid the rising student migration from Kerala and the absence of a mechanism to address the challenges being faced by students abroad, the State government has decided to launch an exclusive interactive student migration portal to aid in the safe and secure migration of students to foreign countries. On an average, around 2 to 2.5 lakh students migrate to various countries annually from Kerala, and as per pravasi student cards issued by the NoRKA-Roots, Keralite students are in as many as 54 foreign countries, with most concentrated in Canada, the U.S., the U.K., Australia, Germany, and CIS countries. The interactive student portal, which will also provide support networks for students in distress through diaspora connections and NoRKA help desks, is a first step in this direction, and the budget for the next financial year has earmarked a sum of Rs 50 lakhs for setting up an exclusive student migration cell in Kerala. The Kerala Migration Survey 2023 put the number at about 2.5 lakhs in 2023, a significant rise from 1.29 student emigrants in 2018, underscoring a significant shift in the demographics of emigrants from Kerala.
