Can Rahul Gandhi’s NYAY give justice to Wayanad’s poor?
Live MintNew Delhi:While the announcement by the Congress that party president Rahul Gandhi will fight from a second seat—the Wayanad Lok Sabha constituency in northern Kerala—is proving to be a political potboiler with both the Left and the Bharatiya Janata Party attacking the Gandhi scion, the socio-economic context of the chosen constituency is no less fascinating. Though Kerala is considered a benchmark for other states in India for its stellar progress in human development, Wayanad with a large tribal population has the highest concentration of poverty in the state at 32.85%. In its list of 117 aspirational districts released last year, the NITI Aayog named Wayanad as the only district from Kerala that needed to catch up on socio-economic indicators—with the rest of Kerala, as well as the country. “Wayanad is going to prove that a huge leap may be made in the income of people by protecting environment and raising defence against climate change, and this experience will be a model for the whole country,” finance minister of Kerala, Thomas Issac said in his budget speech on 31 January.
