More than 25 arrested after UN convoy attack in Lebanon

UNIFIL deputy commander wounded when convoy he travelled in was attacked by protesters who set his UN vehicle on fire. “More than 25 people have been arrested by Lebanese army intelligence”, with another person detained by the security services, Lebanese Interior Minister Ahmad al-Hajjar told reporters after an emergency security meeting on Saturday. The Lebanese army said in a statement acting commander Major-General Hassan Odeh had contacted UNIFIL and pledged to “work to arrest the citizens who attacked its members and bring them to justice”. Lebanese state news agency NNA reported al-Hajjar called the emergency meeting on Saturday to discuss the situation and described the assault as a “crime against UNIFIL forces”. The Amal Movement, the political party of parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, a Hezbollah ally, said in a statement “the attack on UNIFIL is an attack on southern Lebanon” and called for the army and security forces to pursue the perpetrators.
