Shiromani Akali Dal begins membership drive

In an attempt to revive the party, the Shiromani Akali Dal on Monday began the party’s membership drive, even as the rebels have expressed unhappiness over the party not adhering to the directions of Akal Takht — the highest Sikh temporal seat. Senior party leader Daljit Singh Cheema said the drive would continue till February 20 and that elections to the post of president of the party would be held on March 1. Meanwhile, rebel Akali leader Gurpartap Singh Wadala held a meeting with Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Raghbir Singh in Amritsar. The rebel Akali leaders are unhappy with the party not enforcing Akal Takht’s directions for the party’s restructuring.
