Small onion growers of the Perambalur, who are often hit by price fluctuations, could look forward to better days as the Kerala State Horticultural Products Development Corporation has come forward to procure shallots and other vegetables from farmers of the district. The Corporation entered into the Memorandum of Understanding on Tuesday with the Vegetable Business Joint Committee, Perambalur, comprising members of Perambalur Maize and Small Onion Farmers Producers Company and Alathur Collective Farming Farmers Producers Company, for procuring small onions and other fruits and vegetables from the two companies. Under the MoU, the two farmers producers companies would procure small onions and vegetables from the farmers, grade and pack them at the Chettikulam Small Onion Market Complex and send the consignments to Horticorp, which will bear the packing, loading and transport charges, S.Esther Premakumari, Deputy Director of Agricultural Marketing and Agri Business, Perambalur, told The Hindu. “The agreement will help the small onion farmers of Perambalur district to sell their produce at remunerative price without the interference of middlemen, thus avoiding distress sale.
