Bill to limit health orders passes, but DeWine promises veto

Associated Press

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Republican Gov. Mike DeWine — after promising a veto — failed to convince lawmakers Thursday not to pass legislation that would limit the powers of his administration and health officials as the virus’ spread across Ohio reached new peaks. “In national security measures like this, this bill would make Ohio slow to respond to the crisis,” DeWine said. This is not a bill that can become law.” Earlier Thursday, DeWine for the first time designated one of the state’s most populous areas, Franklin County, home to Columbus, as a purple zone on the state’s color-coded alert system. While the numbers continued to rise in nearly every corner of the state, Ohio lawmakers convened for a lame duck session Thursday to vote on the bill DeWine promises to veto and a number of other outstanding bills.
