WA's new firearms laws explained — how to get a gun licence and how domestic violence perpetrators will be restricted

Around 90,000 West Australians are on the cusp of being affected by the biggest changes to the state's firearms laws in decades, which have now passed parliament. The changes — touted by the government as "Australia's toughest firearms laws" — are meant to make it harder to get licences, including by requiring stronger evidence of why firearms are needed. The government's been running a buyback scheme for people who will have to give up their guns under the new laws, with around 14,000 returned at a cost of $5.2 million as of last Friday. To get, renew and keep a firearms licence, West Australians will need to convince WA Police they're a "fit and proper person", a process which will now incorporate a mental and physical health check. A family and domestic violence complaint will automatically strip firearms owners of their guns under tough new gun laws being introduced by the WA government in the wake of the Floreat shooting murders.
