The remaining campers were evacuated and trails in the area were closed “due to the extreme nature of this incident,” Olympic National Park Wildlife biologist Tom Kay said in a statement. A boy miraculously escaped with minor injuries after a cougar confrontation in Washington state “Olympic National Park has extensive protocols in place for wildlife observations, interactions, and attacks and the lethal removal of this cougar is in line with these protocols,” it said. All of Olympic National Park is considered cougar territory and visitors are urged not to hike or jog alone.
