RSPCA ‘devastated’ to euthanise XL bully dogs
The TelegraphThe RSPCA has said it is “devastated” that it will have to euthanise XL bullies after the Government banned them. Animal welfare charities are unable to rule out the possibility that they will have to euthanise the dogs in their care after Feb 1, when it becomes illegal to own the breed without an exemption certificate under new legislation. A spokesman for The Dogs’ Trust said: “It is true that this puts The Dogs’ Trust along with our fellow animal welfare charities, in a difficult position. Doing the best for the dogs in our care is always our priority, and we have applied for exemptions where we have determined that a dog’s welfare can be maintained in kennels long term. We must consider all options for those whose welfare would deteriorate if they spent the rest of their life in kennels, and unfortunately that includes euthanasia.” A spokesman for the RSPCA told The Telegraph: “From Feb 1 2024 we are devastated that the new law will mean we will have no option but to euthanise all dogs who have been identified as an XL bully type by a police dog legislation officer, and have been signed over to us.
