Garcetti’s proposed city budget increases spending for LAPD by 3%

LA Times

The mayor’s plan would continue to provide a force of about 9,750 sworn police officers. Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti is proposing a 3% increase in funding for the city’s Police Department for the upcoming budget year, disappointing advocates who have called for the agency’s defunding. The mayor’s plan, which covers the fiscal year starting July 1, would continue to provide a force of about 9,750 sworn police officers. Albert Corado, an activist who has been calling for the dismantling of the LAPD for nearly three years, said he is “angry but not surprised” by Garcetti’s spending plan for the police. Given the massive protests over police brutality last year, the mayor should have scaled back the number of officers by at least 1,000, said Corado, who is running for a City Council seat representing an area from Echo Park to Hollywood.
