Bill Self, mourning his dad, preached ‘the little things,’ and it drove the Jayhawks’ comeback win against Kansas State

MANHATTAN, Kan. — Bill Self Sr. would never blow up at his kids about the big stuff. “If you’re late for curfew or if you let your car run out of gas, oh yeah, he’d go off on you,” Bill Self Jr. said. “That always stuck with me,” Barry Hinson, Self’s first assistant at Oral Roberts, said when reached on Friday afternoon. “We’ve got to go after the ball with two hands.” Self said he also told his team: “Guys, this will be the most fun locker room all year if we just go out and execute.” The Jayhawks never panicked. “I think he was as excited as any game I’ve been around,” Roberts, who has coached by Self’s side for 21 years, said afterward.
