Tamil Nadu opposition parties boycott Erode bypoll, accuse DMK of intimidation
India TodayThe trend of boycotting bypolls in Tamil Nadu continues as two opposition parties, AIADMK and DMDK, announced on Saturday their decision to skip the upcoming Erode East byelection, scheduled for February 5, alleging intimidation by Chief Minister MK Stalin-led Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam. AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami was the first to declare the boycott, followed by DMDK General Secretary Premalatha Vijayakanth. Reiterating the reason he gave for boycotting the Vikravandi bypoll which was held on July 10, 2024, AIADMK's Palaniswami alleged that the DMK would use intimidation tactics and unleash violence to win the seat. Meanwhile, DMDK general secretary Premalatha Vijayakanth stated that they have no faith in the manner in which the bye-election will be held as it will be "against democracy".
