NBA All-Star Game returning to East vs. West format in 2024

The NBA All-Star Game is returning to its old format pitting the Eastern Conference against the Western Conference this season, the league announced Wednesday. What Adam Silver said about the change When asked Wednesday afternoon in Indianapolis why the league changed the format, NBA commissioner Adam Silver said “it felt like it was time.” “I said earlier in keeping with this overall theme of ‘back to basketball’ this season, I think we recognize we heard it from our fans,” Silver said. I think, though, that maybe we need to refocus ourselves on what this league is really about, and that’s about the best basketball in the world.” Silver said when league officials discussed how to improve the All-Star Game, it being located in Indianapolis in 2024 “makes me think about the game sort of at its roots.” “And ultimately, we thought if there was ever a place to restore the NBA to something that seemed more classic was at an All-Star Game in Indianapolis, where you featured East versus West, no tricked-up endings like we’ve had in the past with the so-called Elam Ending, let’s just make it a pure 48-minute basketball game,” he said. The NBA also altered the All-Star Game in 2020 by implementing the Elam Ending, a scoring format that sets a target point total for teams to reach in order to win, thus guaranteeing every game ends on a winning basket or free throw, rather than the clock running out.
