Aboriginal politician Yingiya Guyula concerned racism is worsening towards First Nations people in Darwin
ABCAn Aboriginal Northern Territory politician says he believes racism is worsening in Darwin after he was asked to show identification before refuelling a rental car at a service station. Independent MP for Mulka and Yolŋu senior leader Yingiya Guyula said the interaction in inner-city Darwin last week made him feel "really angry and unwanted". "I was dressed up in uniform — most of the time I wear my work shirts — and that didn't even convince people working in the servo." In one example, he said his family waited patiently for customer service inside a Darwin shop but "several shop attendants didn't want to come and help us". Larrakia traditional owner says 'call it out' Larrakia traditional owner Richard Fejo said he was unsurprised by Mr Guyula's experiences of racism in Darwin, and urged people to "call it out" when they see it.
