
Over ₹75 crore spent on rejuvenation of Vembanad lake in Kochi
The HinduThe government has spent over ₹75 crore towards the conservation and restoration of Vembanad lake along the catchment area close to the Kochi Corporation and Maradu municipal limits as of January 2025, according to official estimates. The projects earmarked included sewage treatment plants, faecal sludge treatment plants, and biomining on the directive of the Principal Bench of the National Green Tribunal in a case pertaining to the indiscriminate pollution of Vembanad and Ashtamudi lakes. Authorities spent another ₹94 lakh between April 1, 2023, and January 15, 2025, towards the project. The other proposed STPs include a 105-kilolitre-per-day facility for the Rajiv Gandhi Awas Yojana apartments in Fort Kochi and a 1-MLD faecal sludge treatment plant at Brahmapuram, according to the report.
