IRCTC and IRFC get 'Navratna' status. Here's what it means

The government on Monday awarded 'Navratna' status to two railway public sector companies, Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation and Indian Railway Finance Corporation. The new status gives these companies greater financial independence, allowing them to invest up to Rs 1,000 crore without needing approval from the government. Navratna companies can: Invest up to Rs 1,000 crore or 15% of their net worth on a single project without government approval. Some of the well-known companies that already have Navratna status include Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited, a telecom service provider and Rail Vikas Nigam Limited, a railway infrastructure company.
