Griner using new platform for greater good in return to WNBA

PHOENIX — Brittney Griner caught a flight to Washington, D.C., to attend the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner, landed back at Phoenix around 4 a.m. and was up five hours later for the start of training camp. “It’s cool because now I’m able to reach even more people and bring them into the WNBA, but then also keep them aware of other people that are still left behind right now and trying to get home,” Griner said. “Just using that bigger outlet to continue to support others that don’t have the spotlight or the media coverage that they should be able to get.” Griner has been an LGBTQ+ activist since publicly coming out in 2013 and became the first openly gay athlete to be “That definitely is high on the list of things that I will be fighting for and speaking up against,” she said. I think it’s a crime to separate someone for any reason.” Following her detainment in Russia, Griner has taken an active role in trying to help bring home other Americans detained in foreign countries. “She looks the same and even when she got back, the first time I saw her it was like, it’s still BG,” Mercury forward Sophie Cunningham said.
