EPA gives two Latrobe Valley coal mines permission to release water into nearby river

Victoria's environmental regulator has given permission for two Latrobe Valley coal mines to release water into a nearby river system, after recent flooding sparked concerns of a mine wall collapse. Permission to release water into river The EPA said Energy Australia would be allowed to pump up to "232 megalitres per day to be diverted from the Township Field pond into the Latrobe River at a different discharge point". Fishers say mining companies should pay Gippsland Lakes Recreational Fishing Alliance vice-president Rob Caune said allowing the two companies to release extra water, which would end up in the Gippsland Lakes, was very concerning.
