Little change in India’s unemployment rate in urban areas: PLFS data

India’s unemployment rate in urban areas during July-Sept 2024 stood at 6.4%, compared to 6.6% in the same period last year, according to the government’s quarterly periodic labour force survey released on Monday. According to the government’s Economic Survey 2023-24, India needs to create 7.85 million non-farm jobs every year until 2030 to absorb its growing labour force. The labour force participation rate, a key indicator, in urban areas among persons of age 15 years and above showed an increase from 49.3% during July–September 2023 to 50.4% in July–September 2024, according to the latest PLFS. The PLFS also brings out an annual report on employment and unemployment rates in both urban and rural areas based on both CWS and usual status, which is a reference period of 12 months.
