India TodayThe new parliament building was needed to keep up with the country’s growing population, Nationalist Congress Party leader Ajit Pawar said, in an absolute contradiction of his party line. The NCP was among the 19 opposition parties that skipped the inauguration of the new parliament building on Sunday. Earlier, in a joint-statement with 18 other “like-minded parties”, the NCP said: “When the soul of democracy has been sucked out from Parliament, we find no value in a new building.” Sharad Pawar, Ajit Pawar's uncle and the chief of the NCP, had expressed concerns over the rituals followed during the inauguration and said they took the country several decades. “This is in huge contrast to the country's first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, talking about the concept of modern India and a series of rituals performed at the new Parliament building today in Delhi.
