Washington observations: A frustrating start, Daron Payne emerges and Curtis Samuel’s absence

There were moments early last season when the Washington Football Team’s losses piled up that Ron Rivera’s positivity sounded like some Capitol Hill operative trying to spin a narrative. “I do know to give ourselves an opportunity, a chance to be one of those types of teams, we’ve got to play like one of those,” Rivera said. “We’ve got to play disciplined football all the way across the board in all three phases.” Washington’s offense is undergoing a transition, one that slowed immediately after wide receiver Curtis Samuel landed on injured reserve before the regular-season opener and another key addition, quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick, joined him after he injured his right hip in Week 1. Gibson, who has six receptions on the season, dropped a catchable pass inside Buffalo’s 5-yard line one play before Heinicke dove for Washington’s second touchdown.
