Karnataka government planning to ban hookah bars, raise age for smoking

India Today

The Karnataka Health Minister, Dinesh Gundu Rao, announced that the government is considering banning hookah bars and raising the legal age for tobacco consumption from 18 to 21 years. The state government is also planning to raise the legal age for purchasing tobacco from 18 to 21. The current COTPA prohibits smoking in public places and the sale of tobacco products within 100 yards of educational institutions. However, the proposed amendments aim to extend this prohibition to areas around 100 meters of hospitals, health institutions, courts, government offices, and religious establishments.
