Class of 2020: 'The reality of being at university during Covid– and what this year's freshers should know'
The TelegraphLooking back, it was never going to be a normal start for first year students. As soon as term began last September, almost 2,000 freshers at Manchester Metropolitan University were ordered to self-isolate after hundreds tested positive for coronavirus. Things were tense, and on Nov 5, the first day of England’s second national lockdown, thousands of students at Manchester University protested against the erecting of fences around Fallowfield Halls – many believed the “security measure” was to lock them in rather than deter outsiders from entering the campus. Between September and May, the number of students who dropped out of university was down by 4 per cent compared with the same time in 2019-20, and down 17 per cent compared with 2018-19. ‘No matter what’s in store next year, you will make plenty of friends’ Hermione Blandford, 20, Exeter University
