Asylum seekers plead to be released from detention centres amid coronavirus fears
ABCHundreds of asylum seekers in Sydney's Villawood detention centre have signed an open letter to Prime Minister Scott Morrison pleading for their release amid the coronavirus pandemic. Key points: Detainees in Villawood detention centre are fearful they will contract the coronavirus They have written to the PM pleading to be released, under strict conditions Experts believe it is inevitable that COVID-19 will find its way into detention centres "It is only a matter of time before it will breach our closed environment," the letter states. The doctors have warned that the estimated 1,400 asylum seekers and non-citizens being held in detention centres across Australia are living in crowded conditions that preclude adequate social distancing or self-isolation. Joshua Davis, president of the Australasian Society for Infectious Diseases, told the ABC it was "inevitable" coronavirus would make its way into Australia's detention centres. "The Government has recommended to the public that social distancing needs to be practised to prevent the spread of coronavirus … and that is simply not possible in overcrowded conditions such as immigration detention centres."
