Asylum seekers plead to be released from detention centres amid coronavirus fears

Hundreds of asylum seekers in Sydney's Villawood detention centre have signed an open letter to Prime Minister Scott Morrison pleading for their release amid the coronavirus pandemic. Joshua Davis, president of the Australasian Society for Infectious Diseases, told the ABC it was "inevitable" coronavirus would make its way into Australia's detention centres. "The Government has recommended to the public that social distancing needs to be practised to prevent the spread of coronavirus … and that is simply not possible in overcrowded conditions such as immigration detention centres."
