India in touch with US over accommodation of religious sensitivities of deportees

Amid the controversy around the "mistreatment" of illegal Indian immigrants deported last month, the government said it has raised concerns with US authorities regarding the alleged violation of the religious rights of Sikhs in connection with the allegations that they were made to travel without their turbans. Last month, Jatinder Singh, who was among the 112 Indians deported from the US to Amritsar, alleged that the US Army threw his turban in the dustbin after forcing him to take it out. He also alleged that he was in shackles for around 36 hours on the US military aircraft that brought him and 111 undocumented Indians back to India. Replying to a question posed by Rajya Sabha MP Harbhajan Singh about whether the government was aware of the Sikh people from Punjab being deported without their turbans and whether it had raised the matter with the US, Minister of State for External Affairs, Kirti Vardhan Singh, said that the matter was raised with the Trump administration who has replied that none of the deportees were instructed to remove their religious head coverings.
