Periya twin murder case verdict: 14 convicted, 10 let off

Fourteen accused, mostly alleged CPI activists, including former Uduma MLA K. V. Kunjuraman, were convicted in the politically sensitive Periye twin murder case by a CBI Special Court on Saturday, December 28, 2024. Those who have been found guilty by the court are Peethambaran, Saji George Suresh Anilkumar Jijin Sreerag, Aswin Sudheesh, Renjith Surendran Manikandan, K. V, Kunjuraman, Velutholi Raghavan and A. V. Bhaskaran The court found the accused guilty of various offences including murder, unlawful assembly, criminal conspiracy, rioting and wrongful restraint. The accused hatched a conspiracy among themselves on February 14, 2019, at Echiladukkam Bus Stop, Periye, to murder Youth Congress leaders Kripesh, 21, and Sarath Lal, 23 years, to retaliate against the assault on Peethambaran, the first accused and Surendran, the fifth accused on January 5, 2019 at Kalliot town. The case, which the Crime Branch initially investigated, was handed over to the CBI after the parents of the slain youngsters moved the Kerala High Court.
