The American Airlines crash was a long time coming.
SlateIn the days since an American Airlines flight collided with a Black Hawk helicopter over the Potomac River, killing dozens, there’s this one fact I can’t stop thinking about: It’s been 15 years since a crash like this has happened. A year and a half ago, Slate’s Dan Kois wrote an article titled “Everyone Seems to Agree a Major Plane Crash Is Coming.” “We’re overdue,” one pilot told him. Full staffing for the United States’ air traffic controllers would be over 14,000 controllers. At some point, perhaps, America will come to feeling like, Well, if what we have is one crash every 15 years, that is as close as we’re going to get to absolute safety. Even at the worst years of plane crashes in America, people weren’t dying at anything like the levels that people die every month in car crashes in the United States.
