Child in serious condition amid meningococcal B outbreak in Yarrabah community near Cairns

A child is in a serious condition in intensive care with meningococcal disease amid an outbreak in a Far North Queensland community. "There's not bad immunisation rates in Yarrabah they could be a bit better and we'll be trying to contribute to that," Professor Dugdale said. Professor Dugdale said meningococcal B was "often a mild illness" with a high likelihood some people are carrying the bacteria without any symptoms. Professor Dugdale said the two cases were "not immediate contacts" of one another but "contacts of contacts", and the exact nature of the spread was unconfirmed. "On the other hand, many people have meningococcal B in their throats as carriers, so if it colonises a whole community then we can get sporadic cases," he said.
