Light rail start date unknown as Transport Canberra reveals April not guaranteed
ABCThe ACT Government has admitted that re-laying light rail tracks in Canberra's north played a part in blowing out the completion date for stage one of the project. Key points: Tracks on Flemington Road had to be re-laid Head of Transport Canberra says he "wouldn't put the house" on an April start date Some trees, used to line the route, have died and will be replaced Light rail, from Gungahlin to Civic, was initially due to be up and running by the end of last year, but the start date was pushed back until early 2019. "There were some occasions on Flemington Road where the tracks didn't quite meet our tolerances and our exacting standards," Deputy Director General of Transport Canberra Duncan Edgehill said. While Mr Edgehill maintained light rail would be operational "in early 2019", he admitted there was still no official start date and would not guarantee an April opening. Dead trees to be replaced Transport Canberra also confirmed a "small number" of trees along the light rail route had died and would need to be replaced.
