‘Damaged ECR road in Ramanathapuram district poses danger to lives of road users’
The HinduThe bad shape of the East Coast Road stretch in Ramanathapuram district is a major factor in several road accidents, say road users. “As National Highways Authority of India, which previously maintained the road, says the State Highways Department has taken over the responsibility of the road, there is no one to be questioned now,” says K. Pachammal, a Centre of Indian Trade Union member. “Locals at least are of the potholes and drive slowly, but outsiders think of it as highways and speed through the road.” As many villages and residential areas are situated on either side of the stretch, vehicles crossing from one side of the road to another sometimes become a reason for accidents, he adds. A Highways Department official said that as the State Highways Department did not maintain the road, they could not repair the damaged areas. Though National Highways had acquired the road from the State Highways Department to conduct survey for widening the road into four-lane road, they were not doing any repair works.
