If we’re serious about counteracting the rise of far-right extremism, we need to understand what makes it appealing
ABCGovernments agencies, civil society and academics may not agree on many issues, but they have all been sounding the alarm over the rise of right-wing extremism for some time now. The media frequently report, and political leaders publicly condemn, the stunts of far-right groups, and the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation regularly highlights the threats of nationalist-racist “ideologically motivated” violent extremism. In my recent book Democracy Strikes Back: Understanding and Countering the Rise of the Far-right, I argue that one of the reasons for this lack of progress lies in the common but problematic insistence — apparent in the public debate, policymaking and P/CVE programs — that the far-right is a fringe movement on the “extreme” margins of society. Grievances When such mindsets coincide with personal or collective grievances — such as people’s sense of injustice and feelings of being ostracised, voiceless and “left behind” — it can significantly increase their receptiveness to far-right messaging. And a recent study has confirmed that “fears of downward mobility feelings of subjective social marginalization” increase the appeal of far-right political movements among those who belong to the middle class.
