Kochi’s port connectivity highway caught in delay over demand for alignment change

The construction of a four-lane port connectivity national highway in the Netoor-CIFT Junction corridor has reportedly run into rough weather as the Cochin Port Authority has sought a change of alignment for the proposed highway on Willingdon Island. National Highways Logistics Management Limited and the National Highways Authority of India have agreed to it, provided the CPA hands over ₹100 crore as additional expense for the approximately 2.20-km change of alignment in the vicinity of CIFT Junction for the proposed 6-km-long NH corridor, sources said. While the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways had approved the alignment for the port connectivity NH corridor in November 2023, the CPA said it needed time to take a decision since it passed through land bordering the backwaters where a hospitality project was planned. Since much of the alignment passed through the backwaters and port land, hardly 75 houses and other buildings were to be acquired for the proposed port connectivity NH.
