Elephants take dead calves to be buried in untrodden paths: Study

The Hindu

GUWAHATI Elephants in the eastern Himalayan floodplains bury their calves in a ‘legs upright’ position, a new study has found. Rampant environmental changes and forest destruction push Asian elephants and their African counterparts to explore human spaces to fulfil their dietary and ecological requirements, leading to ‘novel’ elephant behaviours in shared spaces. Their study on “unearthing calf burials among Asian elephants” was published in the latest issue of the Journal of Threatened Taxa. The major findings reflect that the carcasses were carried by trunks and legs for a distance before being buried in a ‘legs upright’ position,” the study said.
