WRD recommends inclusion of water user association representatives in JAC to check water theft in canals in Tiruppur district
The HinduThe Water Resources Department has recommended inclusion of representatives of water user associations at village-level in the Joint Action Committee headed by Revenue Divisional Officers to check illegal pumping of water from irrigation canals. In a communication to the Tiruppur district administration earlier this month, A. Mahendran, Executive Engineer of WRD, Thirumoorthy Division, Udumalpet, made a recommendation for inclusion of water users along the Parambikulam Aliyar Project canals and Udumalpet Canal. According to the officials, since monitoring of water theft in the canals was a tough proposition, presence of representatives of water users associations encompassing registered ayacutdars, in the JACs, would serve as an effective deterrent. Welcoming the WRD’s recommendation, Mr. Velusamy said while confining the role of representatives of water user associations to respective jurisdiction at the village level was not acceptable, the constructive step deserved to be appreciated.
