Set conditions and route, but allow Tipu Sultan rally: High Court to Pune Police

The Bombay High Court on Thursday asserted that there is no legal prohibition against holding rallies to commemorate the birth anniversary of Mysore ruler Tipu Sultan. The court directed the Pune Rural Superintendent of Police to allow such rallies while deciding routes and imposing necessary conditions to maintain public order. The court was hearing a petition filed by AIMIM leader Faiyaz Shaikh, whose request for a rally in Baramati had been denied by the Pune district police, citing objections from certain groups and concerns over law and order. The petitioners contended the police’s orders that the rally for Tipu Sultan could be held only at a private place and not in the Hindu-dominated Baramti area.
