Opinion: In dire straits - Indians send SOS on eve of Budget 2025

Most analysts seem to think the Indian economy faces several and severe challenges on the external front; the latest one being the warning by US President Donald Trump to impose punitive tariffs on India. An exclusive C Voter survey conducted for India Today on the eve of the Union Budget reveals a startling insight: the ordinary Indian has never been as pessimistic as today in all the ten years since 2014 when Narendra Modi became Prime Minister. But despite responsible fiscal policies since Covid, inflation, particularly food inflation, has devastated the family budgets of lower middle-class Indians who form the bulk of the population. The C Voter survey for India today reveals that close to three fourths of respondents think a family income of between Rs 3,60,000 to Rs 12,00000 is required for an “average” quality of life.
