New UK Speaker Sir Lindsay Hoyle uses first speech to pay tribute to daughter who took her own life

ABC

The new Speaker of the British Parliament has used his first speech to pay tribute to his daughter, who took her own life in 2017. Labour MP Sir Lindsay Hoyle was one of seven candidates to replace John Bercow, who retired last week after a decade in the job. Sir Lindsay, who served as deputy speaker under Mr Bercow from 2010, promised to be "neutral" and "transparent". Sir Lindsay Hoyle was "dragged" to the speaker's chair by colleagues in the traditional show of reluctance. Sir Lindsay Hoyle served as deputy speaker to John Bercow between 2010 and 2019.
