Former Australian of the Year Richard Scolyer has 'complex surgery' to determine if brain tumour has returned
Australian of the Year Richard Scolyer has undergone a "complex surgery" on his brain as part of his ongoing treatment for brain cancer. Professor Scolyer was the first in the world to receive combination immunotherapy before removing a brain tumour — treatment developed by Prof Georgina Long and colleagues to treat melanoma. Becoming 'patient zero' Professor Scolyer was diagnosed with glioblastoma IDH wild-type in early June 2023 and became "patient zero" in a pioneering immunotherapy approach that produced remarkable results. As one of the world's top melanoma pathologists, Professor Scolyer's Co-Medical Director of Melanoma Institute Australia, Professor Long, and their colleagues took everything they had learnt about fighting melanoma and adapted it to brain cancer treatment.
