Bengal governor takes charge as interim VC of state universities
India TodayAmid an ongoing row in Bengal over the norms of appointing vice-chancellors of state universities, Raj Bhavan on Friday issued a press release indirectly stating that the governor, Dr CV Ananda Bose, will remain interim VC of universities in Bengal where vacancies exist. “To provide them relief, Honorable Governor of WB in his capacity as the Chancellor has decided to discharge the duties of the VCs in these Universities till new interim VCs are appointed,” the presser announced. Earlier in June, Raj Bhavan issued a presser announcing that the Governor in his capacity appointed at least 11 interim vice-chancellors for several institutions, including the University of Kalyani, the University of Burdwan, The Sanskrit College and University, Sidho Kanho Birsha University, Kazi Nazrul University, Dakshin Dinajpur University, the University of Calcutta, Jadavpur University, Bankura University, Baba Saheb Ambedkar Education University, and Diamond Harbour Women’s University. STATE MULLING LEGAL STEP: EDUCATION MINISTER On Friday, Education Minister Bratya Basu again publicly condemned Governor Bose’s decision to undertake the responsibilities of VC for vacant seats.
