Brazil official: No water rationing in Rio before July
Associated PressRIO DE JANEIRO — Water rationing in drought-struck Rio de Janeiro won’t begin before July, even if rains fail to materialize during the current rainy season, the state’s top environmental official pledged on Friday. State Environment Secretary Andre Correa acknowledged the region is “experiencing the worst water crisis in its history,” but said water provisioning would continue as normal through July, even in the worst-case scenario of continued drought over the coming weeks and months. “Let’s be clear, here in Rio, there is not any kind of rationing.” He said the situation in Sao Paulo is “infinitely worse.” Sao Paulo’s governor, Geraldo Alckmin, has been widely criticized after insisting for months there would be no rationing even as the taps went dry in parts of the city. Correa said if the drought persists, “various companies” down river from a water treatment plant on Rio’s Guandu River might have supplies slashed as a “drastic” measure.
