I Just Found Out I’m Going to Be a Dad. I Never Pictured Having to Raise Kids Like This.
SlateThis is part of Wedge Issues, a pop-up advice column about politics, running now through the election. Jerry Seinfeld has a bit in which he quotes Warren Beatty telling him: “One of the nice things God does is that he doesn’t let people who don’t have kids know what they’re missing.” Having experienced being a parent and not being a parent, I heartily endorse this quote. So much about having a kid doesn’t make logical sense to me: the cost, the political conditions, climate change creating havoc that can feel random, and, on a more personal level, the things I want to do that don’t involve children and in fact would be hampered by having them. The novel takes place during the kind of catastrophe that could bring about societal collapse—but none of the main characters are able to know what’s going on, and they certainly can’t control their circumstances. Consider preordering science journalist and friend of Slate Melinda Wenner Moyer’s book Hello, Cruel World!
