The Democratic Republic of Congo has faced the brunt of the new variant, known as Clade 1b, which scientists say is mutating “rapidly” and proving difficult to control. Red Cross officials have been boosting awareness about Mpox in the Don Bosco refugee camp in Doma, Congo In 2024, 19,667 cases and 575 deaths were reported in the Congo, according to the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention Epidemic Intelligence Report - marking around 90 percent of all cases in Africa. “This includes ensuring that clinicians are aware and able to recognise cases promptly, that rapid testing is available, and that protocols are developed for the safe clinical care of people who have the infection and the prevention of onward transmission.” The focus currently remains on retaining vigilance and controlling the potential thread, rather than imposing travel restrictions.
