How education, in and of itself, will not level the playing field
A long-term survey being conducted in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana shows that while more people are transitioning to higher education including to universities, disparities in caste, gender and rural vs urban skew the growth. On comparing higher education transitions amongst both cohorts born seven years apart – we can see a significant increase in those who transitioned to higher education from 44 percent in 2016 to 55 percent amongst Younger Cohort at age 22 in 2023. However, the gender gap still persists amongst the YC with 53 percent women transitioning to higher education compared to 58 percent men in 2023, though this is an improvement vis a vis the Older Cohort gender gap in 2016. On further analysis we find that higher education transitions were higher for urban areas compared to rural areas and was extremely low for both men and women who got married before legal age, since only 2 percent of those with child marriages transitioned into higher education.
