DOJ’s antitrust probe of Google includes search on Android, says rival

CNN Business — Justice Department investigators have asked a Google rival, DuckDuckGo, for detailed information about ways to increase competition in the online search market, an indication the DOJ’s antitrust probe of Google has expanded to include its core product and that the agency may be moving closer to bringing a case. Federal officials met with DuckDuckGo several weeks ago to discuss a proposal that could increase user choice and alter Google’s search market share, the company’s founder, Gabriel Weinberg, told CNN Business. The DOJ’s interest in DuckDuckGo’s proposal highlights how far the antitrust probe has progressed, experts say, suggesting that regulators have identified specific ways it believes Google may be harming competition and are now evaluating potential remedies. “Practically speaking, it’s very common, when you get to a point of thinking seriously that you could go forward with a case, that you have to wonder how you’re going to land the airplane,” said Gene Kimmelman, a senior adviser at the consumer advocacy group Public Knowledge and a former DOJ antitrust official.
