There are no free passes to any World Cup final: Why South Africa captain is wrong

India Today

"We've said from the start that this is the best chance South Africa has ever had to win a World Cup. Hopefully, we can get one up on them for the first time in, I guess, forever," said Dane van Niekerk on the eve of the Women's T20 World Cup semifinal against Australia. And till Thursday morning, it looked to be South Africa's best chance of making their maiden World Cup final seeing the heavy rain in Sydney that saw India through to the final without even taking the field against England. Only Niekerk would know what she meant when she said 'free pass' to the T20 World Cup final or if she was taking a dig at India who qualified for the title clash for being the table-toppers after an abandoned semifinal, but her comments did not go down well with cricket lovers, including Harsha Bhogle. ICC has the provision of reserve day for the Women's T20 World Cup final but before the two semifinal games, a series of players argued in favour of reserve days for world tournament knockouts as it was unfair for weather to decide the fate of the semifinalists at a World Cup as it is not always that the teams see themselves in the last four.
