Environmentalists say waste proposal at Gillman could put crucial wetlands at risk

Millions of tonnes of soil and rock from the Torrens to Darlington tunnel project will be processed at a site in Adelaide's north, despite concerns about the potential contamination risk to nearby wetlands. State Planning Minister Nick Champion has approved a plan for spoil, a combination of soil, rocks and debris, set to be excavated from the $15.4 billion Torrens to Darlington tunnel project to be processed at a site in Gillman, next to the Magazine Creek Wetlands. "Trucks coming every four minutes, 24 hours a day for six years … it's just going to create an enormous impact on this area," Ms McMahon said. Mr Whelan said using the spoil from the T2D project would allow it to be filled at a low cost, and would be "beneficial for every South Australian". While SCAP considers the development application for Lot 501, early works have already begun on the T2D project, which Mr Whelan says will "be within time, within budget."
