World’s first HIV survivor dies after cancer returns

Live Mint

London: Timothy Ray Brown, the first person known to be cured of HIV when he had a unique type of bone marrow transplant, has died in California after relapsing with cancer, his partner said. Brown, born on March 11, 1966, became known as the "Berlin Patient" after his HIV was cleared by treatment there in 2007. He said Brown had made it his life’s work to tell the story of his HIV cure and "became an ambassador of hope". Sharon Lewin, president-elect of the IAS and an HIV specialist at Australia's Doherty Institute, said Brown was "a champion and advocate" for keeping an HIV cure on the agenda.
