Lady Brittan blasts police watchdog over Scotland Yard's botched Operation Midland investigation

The Telegraph

During the botched inquiry their homes were raided by detectives who have since been accused of deliberately misleading a district judge in order to apply for allegedly illegal search warrants. Lady Brittan, who was a magistrate for 26 years, told the committee that the warrants had been used as "a fishing expedition". She said: “The IOPC has inexperienced investigating officers who are not familiar with the criminal law or the requirements of the Police and Criminal Evidence code of practice on search warrants, and lack the necessary investigative skills.” Lady Brittan said none of the mistakes that had been made by the police during Operation Midland had been properly addressed by the IOPC and as a result none of the victims had received proper justice. Lady Brittan said the experience of having to give evidence to the IOPC had been almost as traumatic as having to deal with the false allegations. She said she did not believe that the watchdog had learned any lessons since publishing its much criticised report into the Operation Midland scandal.
