CHARLOTTE KRISTENSEN's Greek white wines
Daily MailThis week, I’m featuring a lesser-known but a personal favourite white grape, Assyrtiko. Hailing from the enchanting island of Santorini, where it thrives in the volcanic soil, it is grown throughout Greece, producing sophisticated, mineral whites akin to Chablis’s sunny cousin. This versatile white pairs excellently with poultry, grilled fish and seafood and is, of course, gorgeous with a simple Greek salad. From the Peloponnese, famed for its Unesco sites and stunning beaches, this wine, from inland vineyards, features fresh lemon and floral notes with a sherbet- mineral zing. With ripe yellow pear and saline tang, this sunny white has a nice bit of weight, making it a delightful match with richer dishes like baked feta or fish with a beurre blanc sauce.
