Read our privacy policy Brazilian musician and composer Joao Gilberto died at the age of 88 at his home in Rio de Janeiro on Saturday, his relatives have confirmed. Actress Piper Perabo tweeted: “Joao Gilberto, a musician I loved and giant of Brazilian bossa nova music, died today. His collaboration with American saxophonist Stan Getz and the amazing voice of Astrud Gilberto on Getz/Gilberto is an album you can’t stop listening to on a summer night.” In 2000, Gilberto won a Grammy for his album Joao Voz E Violao, and in 2017 he received an honorary doctorate in music from Columbia University.
